The Spotlight 🔦
Dublin Sound Lab: Eryk Salvaggio - AI Workshop
Location: The Contemporary Music Centre, Dublin
Date: April 2nd
What is artificial intelligence, and what does it mean for musicians? Beyond automated songwriting, are there other ways to define and design artificial intelligence in the making of sound and music? In this workshop, Eryk Salvaggio (cyberneticforests.com) -- an artist and media theorist who uses AI tools to critique AI -- presents an overview of creative strategies for deploying machine learning that respects human creativity. He will share his process of scoring music from the migrations of Golden Eagles using machine learning; his sonic explorations of electric mushrooms, and what he has learned from the creative misuse of AI music-making with his "cyborg pop" project, The Organizing Committee. After the talk, participants will be given an overview of AI music tools, and techniques, ranging from the experimental to mainstream.
This workshop is suitable for musicians, composers and concert-goers, or anyone with an interest in electronic music and how it is composed, or how technology can be integrated into composition and performance.
Sensors and Systems for Interactive Art - 2 Day Workshop
Location: Carat Artists Collective, Leitrim
Date: April 11th
Shane Finan will run a 2-day workshop on DIY and open source hardware for artists. Attendees will learn how to make interactive artworks using Raspberry Pi and Arduino together.
The course will cover the basics of setting up an operating system on a Raspberry Pi, linking it to an Arduino board, connecting sensors to the board, and passing readings from a sensor into the Raspberry Pi.
Attendees will learn how the different pieces of hardware can be used in artworks, and will learn the basics of three programming languages (Python, bash scripts, and Arduino/C++). The course will include an exploration of how artists use open source and DIY systems in interactive installations.
“cloakroom” at club [construction] !
Location: Digital Arts Studios, Belfast
Date: March 8th - March 28th
“cloakroom” at club [construction] ! hopes to reflect a glimmer of the belonging, betrayal, break-up, revenge, recovery and renewal of queer club-spaces, club-cultures and club-communities of the past, present and future (…?).
Stemming from the findings of a long-term research project into the histories of queer club-culture, “cloakroom” at club [construction] ! stems from a fascination with the historical adjacency of avant-garde queer club-communities with heterosexual working-class sports clubs in industrial Western-European cities (such as London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Manchester and Belfast), and the strange, occasional, cultural-phenomena of these polarising club sub-cultures merging as a result of their close-proximity. “cloakroom” at club [construction] ! blurs the props of hyper-masculinist fandom, sports-spectatorship and fan-culture, with the camp extravagance of queer masculinity and the queer club-space.
LAURA BUCKLEY: PAINTING WITH LIGHT

EARTH RISING 2024
Deadline: 12-04-2024
Dublin
“We are delighted to once again invite applications from interested artists, collectives and community groups through our Open Call.
Art has always played a powerful role in reflecting and shaping society. In a rapidly changing world, here at IMMA, we understand our role as a space for dialogue and understanding, promoting social progress and cultural innovation in response to contemporary challenges. The climate crisis represents one of the greatest challenges of our time, requiring collective efforts to mitigate its impacts and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
By engaging audiences in creative and thought-provoking ways, IMMA can foster a sense of urgency around the need for environmental stewardship and to connect communities in an increasingly divided world.”
TULCA 2024: Open Call
Deadline: 28-03-2024
Galway
The 22nd edition of TULCA Festival of Visual Arts will embed itself in multiple venues and locations throughout Galway City and County in November 2024, accompanied by an extensive public programme and publication.
Entitled The Salvage Agency, curator Michele Horrigan welcomes artistic proposals and artwork submissions that consider the agency and role of art in contemporary ecology and environmental study, and those that examine the underlying attitudes that have led to today’s critical and urgent impasse.
Galway, on the edge of the northeast Atlantic, is a unique location for a heightened awareness of what is at stake, and why? Explorations of landscape, seascape and nature, public space, colonial history, political structures, the industrial complex and folk narratives are all pertinent. These are paths taken by our collective society in the shaping of today’s world and a contemporary Europe. Can art create an undercurrent of improvisation and frugality, haphazard formality, and change to offer new perspectives, provocations and empathy? From the wreckage, can art nourish a new reality?
