There is Plenty of Room in the Simulation
Following up on the curatorial investigation of this year's transmediale's festival a model, a map, a fiction, in this essay Jussi Parikka argues that nothing actually works on the 1:1 scale, so we needn’t be simplistic about scale. Nothing is really self-identical, because all is mediation. Across media and aesthetics, in every field which has had to negotiate how to inscribe abstraction in a communicable, tangible form, scale is mobilised inside and into the techniques of knowing. The simplicity of measurement is only apparent, it hides a series of scalar loops that reveal something essential: scale is the middle of an intertwining bundle of forces.
Opinion Piece | Our Thoughts on the Irish Arts Council’s “More People, More Places”
Due to the recent announcements from the Arts Council, we wanted to talk about some of the announcements.
The Arts Council announced their three year strategy titled “More People. More Places. More Spaces” and as the title suggests, the plan is to supply more funding to artists, cultural spaces and events. Doing an in depth review of the announcement is sadly out of scope for us right now but we wanted to highlight something that is mentioned.
“The Arts Council is witnessing new and exciting developments in how art is made, who makes it and how the public engages with it. We are embracing the evolution of multi-disciplinary artforms and practices.”
This line combined with the announcement of them looking for a multi-disciplinary arts director could be a strong sign that new media art in Ireland could be getting a bigger spotlight much sooner than we thought.
From our side, we would like to take a moment to express our thoughts on what we, as artists working at the intersection of art and technology require from arts funding institutions. We strongly believe that we deserve enhanced support in terms of financial resources, dedicated platforms for showcasing our work, opportunities such as residencies tailored for new media creation. We sincerely hope that the new art strategy will address these requirements to some extent.
We acknowledge the challenges of expecting a single organisation to cater to the diverse needs of each individual discipline, including our own. Perhaps it would be more beneficial for us to have a separate funding entity that operates independently from the arts council. An example of such an alternative can be found in initiatives like the one offered by the Creative Industries Fund NL.
We applaud the announcements from the arts council and hope that action will follow.
